Probate & Intestacy Costs

We will always provide an initial estimate of costs based on information made known to us at the outset, and we will provide a further more accurate estimate of the legal costs once we have assessed the estate.

GRANT ONLY:  All Probate matters are different.  We can help you through this difficult process by obtaining the Grant of Probate on your behalf starting from £849 plus VAT.  If the Estate is subject to Inheritance Tax costs will start from £1,250 plus VAT.  Disbursements payable in all cases:

As part of our fees we will:

APPLYING FOR THE GRANT, COLLECTING AND DISTRIBUTING THE ASSETS: All Probate matters are different and it is difficult to give definitive estimates.  However, by way of example, if there was one property and then two or three other assets such as bank accounts, life policies or possibly shares, then we would estimate that such matters may take between 6 and 20 hours work at £185+VAT per hour at most. Total costs would therefore be in the region of £1,110 and £3,700 plus VAT. The exact cost will depend on the individual circumstances of the matter. For example, if there is one beneficiary and no property, costs will be at the lower end of the range. If there are multiple beneficiaries, a property and multiple bank accounts, and other assets such as shares then costs will be at the higher end.  We will handle the full process for you. This estimate is for estates where:

Disbursements (these are costs related to your matter that are payable to third parties, such as court fees):

POTENTIAL ADDITIONAL COSTS: If there is no will or the estate consists of any share holdings (stocks and bonds) there is likely to be additional costs that could range significantly depending on the estate and how it is to be dealt with. We can give you a more accurate quote once we have more information.

ESTIMATED TIMESCALE: On average, standard, straightforward estates with no inheritance tax to pay are dealt with within 4-8 months. Typically, obtaining the grant of probate can take 8 to 16 weeks at the present time.

* Please note our fees DO NOT include the cost of legal work undertaken to sell or transfer an estate property.  A separate estimate can be provided for this.

For estates over £100,000, we may also make an additional charge based on a percentage of the value of the cash assets in the estate at 1% and 0.5% on property, plus VAT.
